“Réserve Uatumã”: support and training of local communities in sustainable tourism activities

Fundação Amazonas Sustentavel (FAS), a Brazilian NGO established in 2013, develops programmes with local communities to enhance the environment of Amazonian reservations and set up income-generating activities for the population.

Benefiting from natural wealth and high fishing potential, the Amazonas region attracts many tourists as well as tourist companies in the country. Communities would like to develop local tourist activities to become stakeholders in local economic growth while ensuring local conservation.

FAS is supported by Solidarity AccorHotels throughout its programme. It supports 60 people by restructuring these ecotourism activities through vocational training. AccorHotels in the vicinity (Manaus) receive trainees in their establishments to share professional knowledge and skills.

Daniel Betiol, General manager ibis Manaus Aeroporto

"Our greatest accomplishment with the project is to see in the beneficiaries the motivation and desire to take what will learn in our hotels to their community. We had the chance to have one first contact with them and the exchange of experiences with our hotel employees was fantastic. The work developed by them and the interaction of these communities is continued through their products that are for sale to our guests.”
