Shanghai: 30 new baker-confectioners graduate!

Since 2013, Solidarity Accor has supported the Shanghai Young Bakers (SYB) NGO and every year helps fund the training as baker-confectioners of 30 disadvantaged young people. After an in-depth course, the new class has graduated and are all ready to start their brilliant careers!

On July 20th, 30 young Chinese students received their diplomas from SYB and the Caoyang School, where they had the opportunity to follow courses in French and Chinese pastry-making.

The diplomas, which mark the beginning of a new professional life for the graduates, were handed out by Bernard Nedelec, deputy French consul in Shanghai; Zhijun Yan, Deputy Director of Shanghai Charity Education & Training Center; Helene Hovasse, Head of the agribusiness department of Business France Chine; and Xu Yinwei, Director of Caoyang Vocational School.

Nearly 150 participants attended this event, which provided them with a chance to sample the appetizers and pastries prepared for the occasion by the tutors of Shanghai Young Bakers.

During this ceremony, Chung Tb, founder of the Chi Heng Foundation, mother NGO of SYB, also presented a certificate to April Ling, Head of Accorhotels Communications in China and representative of Solidarity Accor, for the involvement and support of the Accorhotels teams throughout this wonderful adventure. In effect, 4 hotels (Grand Mercure Hongqiao Shanghai, Sofitel Hyland Shanghai, Pullman Skyway Shanghai and Pullman South) have for several years taken part in the initiative by providing internships for the young trainees to complete their courses.

On the occasion, the happy graduates carried out a touching performance: they introduced themselves individually in English and together sang an adaptation of the well-known Beatles song, "Here Comes the Sun": "Here Comes the Sun in Shanghai". A wonderful surprise prepared with the help of their volunteer English teacher from the Stepping Stones NGO!
